Dinner with My Dad, Queen City Grill!

Tuesday night I met my Dad downtown to try out a new to us restaurant. My last day of work (more on that later), I knew I would need something fun to look forward to, so I was excited to have dinner plans and catch up with him! We have a typical dinner get together planned every month or so. It’s a tradition that really helps us keep up with each other’s lives. With me being at school and his crazy work and travel schedule, sometimes scheduling a chance to get together is the only way it will happen! Plus, it’s an excuse to try some {new} great Seattle restaurants! Our new goal is to try a new spot each time – and we have been doing a pretty good job of that!

Queen City Grill was pretty empty when we got there. Maybe because it was a Tuesday, or the day after a Memorial Day holiday weekend? Regardless, we enjoyed a drink at the bar, before getting our table.

Absolute Mandarin club soda and orange

The waitress brought out a free happy hour slider for us me try, but it had meat so I passed most of it along to my Dad. He enjoyed it and I liked the challah-like bread bite I tried!

We I knew we had to get the grilled prawns when I saw them on the appitizer menu.

"Grilled Oaxacan Prawns with a jicama and red onion salad"

My Dad also ordered the Bruschetta appetizer for us to also share.

Toasted Bruschetta with cream cheese, avocado, tomato puree and topped with roasted red peppers.

Both appetizers were good, but the grilled shrimp definitely stole the show. The tomato salsa it was atop reminded me more of a thick tomato pesto. While the bruschetta was tasty too, I really wanted the goat cheese bruschetta that was featured online – but the waiter informed us the menu had recently been updated. I think goat cheese would have been more interesting than (way too much) cream cheese, but even still, the avocado made an interesting, creamy addition to the dish.

For my entree, I was really hoping to order seafood, but in all honesty, the smell of crab wafting through the restaurant when we got there turned me off to that idea pretty much immediately. My Dad agreed with me on this. I decided to roll with a *safe* alternative. Roasted beets are another favorite of mine, and not always found on menus!

Roasted beets, goat cheese, candied pecans and mixed greens with champagne vinegarette

After our drinks, bread and appetizers I wasn’t so hungry anyway, so this was the perfect choice for me. For some reason it looks  a lot smaller in the picture than it actually was. The flavors of the salad were incredible together; I was actually really happy with my order. I also stole some of my Dad’s fabulous roasted veggies – he didn’t have the same appreciation for them as I did – he was focusing on his meat and noodles!

With our dinner, my Dad ordered us a bottle of cabernet sauvignon:

Chateau Montelena“Keep the stem on the table, swirl as fast as you can to aerate …”

He is turning me into a wine-O! I’m not really a beer fan (yuck) but a nice glass of wine with dinner, I can do! 😀

Dinner of course flew by – we always talk the whole time and then it seems to be….time to go! I love these dinners we have and am already looking forward to our next one!

We haven’t set a date or time (yet)….but time to start scouting out new restaurants?!!

Are you close with your parents? Do you have “date nights” like these to get together?

What’s your favorite dinner / drink order? As I said, I’m not a big beer fan, but I do love wine and mixed drinks… just not too fruity! 😛

Oh! In other news…..

I bought the watch!!!!!

*and some Essie nail polish!*

{Lychee Margarita} Memorial Day Weekend Recap!

After I left you Saturday, the day was was full of some of my usual Saturday activities.

Later that afternoon, I headed to the island. This weekend marks my parent’s 27th wedding anniversary and they had dinner reservations here on Bainbridge – and wanted me to join them. I happily tagged along. I had been to Four Swallows before, but never in my drinking age, so it was a more fun experience.

The outfit du jour:

White crop jeans - Khols, black tank - Express, jean jacket and black belt- Forever 21, gold flats - Nordstrom - with a side of WA state ferries in the background :P.

Dinner was great, featuring pouring red wine and grilled prawns — some of my favorites 🙂

Sunday we attended a housewarming party on the island. My parent’s collegue has lived here for a few months now but just had everyone she works with over to see her place. She lives in an adorable little house pretty close to the water, with some really unique middle and far-Eastern decorations, lots of light and very “Crate and Barrel”-esque furniture. Seeing decorated houses like that makes me excited to have my own!

The party included “work” for the guests. We were instructed to use these watercolors she had put out to make a “favorite thing about Bainbridge” painting, which she is going to put together with the rest, into a big piece.

I left early in the afternoon to head back to the city. My friend and I had plans to hit up Happy Hour and then go to Folklife, a Seattle music festival going on every Memorial Day weekend.  We walked through the festival for a while but decided it was too cold/too many people……so instead  headed to a thai restaurant for that ‘happiest of‘ hour.

I ordered a Lychee margarita while she went with a chambord lemon drop. I figured when in Rome Thailand, order something lychee… but honestly, it wasn’t really my favorite. Oh well, I will know next time! We had an interesting bar conversation with a (much older) couple sitting next to us… and overall a fun time out last night!

Lychee Margarita.

Sweet lemon drop with chambord.

…And because sometimes all you really need with drinks like this is to share a big tower of fried thai food…..

Calamari, spring rolls and crab rangoon, coconut prawns.

We got back to her house later, continued the party hanging out and crashed out. This morning I got home, and have to get ready to go babysit in a few minutes for a little girl I have been watching for over a year now. Not really a “day off”, but it should be fun, and make me some extra ca$h money!

What are your memorial day plans??

Have you ever tried / do you like lychee? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had in your drink?

Ps: Have you entered my giveaway yet?! Have you entered Katie’s giveaway?! Another Ps – I did get to see this face yesterday 😉

Gaston!

Friday Fave Fives, Hello Memorial Day Weekend!

Ahhhhhh, it’s been a crazybusy week (aren’t they all these days?) but it is Friday which means one thing….

Yayyyyyyyyy Weekend!! 😛

Crazy to think just one week ago (well, last Thursday night), I was chillin’ in my (upgraded to Hospitality suite) hotel room, waiting for Fitbloggin to kickoff…

Well this Friday had a bit of a different feel…

I may not have been in Baltimore, and I may have only gotten a few hours of sleep after staying out too late and waking up too early; read: why I don’t go out during the week, but I did have some Friday faves’ today!

1. I’m bringing sexy cereal back….. I am a cereal monster, nothing helps a hangover better I think! ;P2. Mixing and matching wardrobe staples. And, my new jean jacket!

Black tights: DKNY for Nordstrom, skirt: Express, jean jacket: Forever 21, (unpictured) black flats: Jessica Simpson for Nordstrom.

3. Eating this {Monster} cookie at work today. It is cookie Friday after all. Okay, maybe a giant cookie helps that hangover better 😛

Chocolate chip walnut cookie. Done and done.

4. Whole Foods having a Friday night “happy hour bites“. Each Friday, the Whole Foods *which ohso conveniently happens to be on my drive home from work* hosts a tasting party of sorts, giving out a ton of gourmet food (and drink) samples in their store. It was like a free dinner tonight! Spicy shrimp, soup samples, grilled pineapple, watermelon, chocolate samples, hotdogs, maccaroni salad, sushi wraps…

Mango avacado wrap and an ahi tuna wrap sample.

There were so many samples tonight and I tried almost everything – I was full after!!

5. Today kicking off Memorial Day weekend –> No school or work Monday! Holler to that! Here’s to (my, and) your weekend being full of friends, family, good weather, horses and *insert your dog/cat here*, bbqs, good food, the farmer’s market, yoga, sushi, a drink or two and general shenanigans :)….

What are you looking forward to this weekend?!

Have you entered my Fitbloggin giveaway?! You only have until Monday!

You Only Turn 21 {Twice}…

Whewww, where have I been!?!

I meant to post last Sunday night, and never hit publish.. and now it’s Sunday again! Anyway….. I have had a good week!

Cinco de Mayo Thursday night…

Purple dress Express, Leather fringe boots Steve Madden, necklace BP for Nordstrom

Peach Liz. My night changed course when I ran into an ex…and we ended up back at the bar.

(My second Paris orientation meeting) and A spring formal dance Friday night…

Yesterday morning started off with a hot yoga session, followed by the usuals:

Saturday University Farmer's Market.

Walking beat driving my car. Especially on the weekends.Walking beats driving my car. Especially on the weekends.

Mandatory weekend Whole Foods stop for coffee and some groceries.

And last night, my twin friends who turned 21 Monday had a birthday party at a cool lounge/bar downtown. Their Dad threw it for them and while it was a lot of his/their siblings friends, some of their friends came out too, it ended up being really fun! (and an open bar, holler Daddy S! : P ) You only turn 21 oncetwice. We went out dancing afterso needless to say it was a late night by the time my head finally hit the pillow at 3 am.

Me and one of the twins!

Today I went back to the Fremont Farmer’s Market that I first visited last weekend. It is an amazingly large flea-type market with more jewlery/clothing vendors than anything else.

Fremont Farmer's Market.

Yoga again tonight and then catching up with laundry/school/my sisters, etc and all of a sudden the weekend is over again, what happened? :/….

Oh well, on to the next!

What was the best thing you did / saw / ate this weekend ? For me it would have to be last night (all of last night), a ginger/raspberry drink I had, dancing/hanging out with friends!! So fun. And doesn’t seem to happen enough. My Mom is actually out of town, in Cancun this weekend, so I couldn’t spend Mother’s Day with her. I’m glad she and my Dad are having fun for their anniversary trip though, and I did get to see her Thursday morning, I took w a break from work to get coffee with them on their way to the airport!

On another note……

Okay, okay I know pretty much all bloggers are obsessed with peanut flour and have been using it like woahh for everything from peanut buttery uses to oats to ‘frosting’, to cookie dough, to mixing with frozen blueberries, to making peanut candy, etc. But, I have to say….I’ve tried it and just don’t really like it that much. I know; gasp! I actually think TJ’s Better n’ Peanut Butter is waaaaay better, and can’t seem to keep my hand outta the cookie jar finger out of the better ‘N jar. Anyone else out there with me on this?

So I ask you: Better 'N Peanut Butter > Peanut Flour?!

Night!! ❤

Jazzy Easter Weekend!

Hey hey how was your {Easter} weekend? 😀

Mine was pretty good! I worked Friday, then went to my study abroad orientation meeting. It was great to learn more/get excited about the travel, and to meet the other students going. It will be crazylifechaning, but fun, I’m sure. I definitely intend to blog my experiences there. 😀

***

Saturday morning I hit up my favorite instructor’s hot power Yoga class, and then wandered through the Farmer’s Market *didn’t buy anything though, I was kind of late and it was a little picked over* because it was such a gorgeous day,

People seemed to be in extra good moods. What can I say, Seattlelite’s tend to get happy when the sun finally comes out… Later, continued my journey downtown to shop for my little sister’s Birthday present and get a free hair makeover by some guy working at Sephora,

He did that with a straightener! I was impressed. (And really wanted it!)

Some other shopping occurred of course,

Leather Motorcycle jacket that I may *neeeeeed* for Paris... Actually a friend works in the designer section of Nordstrom and he snapped this. Excuse my weird expression. 😛

Damn the blog world and bad influences like Gracie,

And Katie,

Tory Burch flats. Swoon. 😉

Saturday night, as I mentioned it was my little sister’s nineteenth birthday, we met at Jazz Alley for Maceo Parker. He. Was. Incredible. The second he started playing his saxophone, it was like nothing I’d heard before – sheer talent – he also sang and had a big group on stage, about 7 or 8 including his son, and was totally hilarious and kept the audience entertained throughout the performance. That hour and a half dinner flew by way too fast.

We concluded with a late-night beach bonfire on the island with some of my sister’s friends who were also home for the Easter weekend. I woke up early Sunday to get ready for our Easter dinner with my grandparents and aunt and uncle, who have just recently moved from Australia to the states.

While the meat eaters enjoyed lamb…

I made a delicious frittata for my sister and I. I was happy with how well it came out, all of the non-vegetarians tried it and there was barely any left!!

Onions and mushrooms, tofu scrambled in, garlic and herb seasoning, grape tomatoes, eggs and two kinds of goat cheese.

After lunch we had to say good bye to Hayley, but took a nice walk later at a nature reserve on the island.

I was lazy enjoying hanging out with my twin friend’s and their mom and not wanting the weekend to end last night, so I ended up staying over at my parents. Waking up an hour and a half from school is always a little inconvenient, but it was worth it. I had a great (fast) couple days home visiting family and friends and recharging. It was kind of much needed after some of last week’s events…

Well I just got home from yoga and cleaning the studio, showered and just about to catch some zzzzs. Today was a long day but I got a lot done in terms of personal to-dos (including finding my Fit Bloggin roomies!!). Which is good because tomorrow is work, and this week is BUSY.
Tell me; How was your Easter weekend? What did you do / cook / eat?!

Best recipe as of late ? I liked my frittata – an experiment gone…right 😉 !
Night!! ❤

But for now — Onward and upward!

My first ever “Five Things Friday,” I am going to share some five fun things that have been on my mind or going on in my life. Let’s spread the positivity!!!!!

  1. My little sister’s 19th Birthday is tomorrow, she is coming home from Oregon (where she goes to school) for the weekend to celebrate and for Easter. Tomorrow night, the fam has tickets to see Maceo Parker perform live at Jazz Alley ! I have been before, a few times actually, they have amazing food and entertinment, I am excited – it never ceases to amaze/impress me!!! I just love going out with my fam!

Maceo Parker, Saxophonist!
  1. Today is Earth Day!!!!!!! I know I have some fellow Earth loving peeps and Coffee loving peeps out there – go to Starbucks today, bring in your own cup and get free coffee!

Darth Day on April 22

  1. I have plans to try a new yoga studio tonight. I have done Yoga to The People in New York City long ago – it was actually what/where I really got into my practice, and they recently opened a Seattle chapter really close to me! Going to check out their hot yoga class tonight and get ma sweat on! 😉

And Finally……………

Also, it is Easter / Passover Weekend! What are you doing to celebrate?!

My aunt (Dad’s sister) recently moved (last weekend actually!) from Australia to the area, haven’t seen her for (2?) years! My sister, parents, aunt and her husband, and grandparents are having ‘Easter brunch’ Sunday morning – oohhh I need to figure out a vegetarian entrée to make!

Well – quite the ramble here!
My mind is kind of all ovah the place today!!

TGIF!!!!
Will be back soon!

 Lots of XOXO,

J $  ❤

What are your Five Fun Things Friday?!!

Any good Easter Vegetarian entree recipes out there?!!!

What are you looking forward to this weekend?!

Would you Believe me…

Would you believe me…………….

If I told you I hopped on a plane and spent last weekend in New York City??!!!

Last time I was there was last fall – with the Fitnessista and Gabriela!Would you believe that I flew 3,000 + miles to spend only two days in the city?

But, I got to see my sister, who i saw last month in Vegas! I took her & my friend and his friend to lunch at The Coffee Shop, a cute hipster esque eatery in Union Square.

Bathroom, mirror shot!

Seeing Morgan and being able to take her out to lunch Saturday was definitely a highlight of the trip. I love my sister!

Would you believe that even though it was supposed to be rainy all weekend, New York City saw some of the best weather they have seen in months (because I was there, obv 😉 )

So, I spent some time walking and shopping in union square, my favorite

And came across a street fair, sampling delicious eats,

While in Union Square, would you believe that I ran into Marina?! I had never actually met her in person – only through blogging – so it was a crazysmallworld moment when I recognized her!

Would you believe that Saturday night, we went to a 12+ person birthday party at this place called the Hurricane Club, where they roasted an entire pig (didn’t partake) and served fancy tiki mixed drinks out of goblets and watermelon, a straw for each person and just let you fire away?!

You better believe that probably wasn’t the best idea for a vegetarian at a pig roast 😉

"To share" Brazilian Rum, Passion Fruit and Ginger

Blurriness intended 😉

Would you believe that I, Jaclyn, who never, ever loses her cell phone, left it in the back of a NYC cab Saturday night and spent the next morning filing a “missing item” report for $24.95 thankyouverymuch online to retrieve it??! Yeah, I can’t either……..

No thanks to you, Tiki drink!!,

It was still a fun night though. After the dinner, I stuck to water for the rest of the night, but the party continued as an after party for the birthday boy, then a few more bars before culminating on the roof of my friend’s apartment. It was a late night early morning!

Other than my lost phone and lost hours of sleep this weekend, it was such an amazingly fun and random trip, and I definitely don’t regret it a bit 🙂 I love, love travel, it is actually something I want to make time, effort and money toward pursuing, so I was happy to oblige that goal with this lil trip. 😀

I only wish I had a few more days there. I love. New. York. City.

****

What did you do last weekend?

What’s the furthest you’ve flown for the shortest amount of time?

Ever recognized a blogger or reader  on the street/ in a store / somewhere random?!
